does hoppes #9 neutralize sweets?
 

just curious, i always follow up sweets with hoppes to neutralize any remaining. does this work or do you have to use alcohol. thanks.

A dry patch or an oiled patch at the end will normally remove or neutralize enough of the residual ammonia to prevent problems.

One solvent you should NEVER use in conjunction with a high-ammonia solvent is Shooter's Choice. The ingredients in SC will combine with the ammonia and form a chemical that WILL etch and damage your barrel. But I've not read any cautionary notes about any other solvent/ammonia mix.

TO BE HONEST, I DON'T KNOW. WHAT I WOULD WONDER ABOUT IS THE CHEMICAL REACTION BETWEEN HOPPES AND SWEETS. I'M A BELIEVER IN NOT MIXING CHEMICALS UNLESS I CAN PERFORM A TEST AND I DO NOT USE MY BARRELS FOR TESTING PURPOSES OTHER THAN SHOOTING.

I TO USE ALCOHOL AFTER SWEETS OR MONTANA EXTREME OR CR-10 OR BORE TECH COPPER REMOVER OR ANY OTHER SOLVENT WITH AMMONIA CONTENT AND THEN AN OILY PATCH, REMEMBER THE ALCOHOL JUST REMOVED ALL THE LUBRICATING PROPERTIES FROM THE BARREL.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE "DESTRUCTIONS" ON THE BOTTLE OF MOST MAUFACTURERS THEY ARE SPECIFIC ABOUT NOT MIXING THEIR PRODUCT WITH SOMEONE ELSES CLEANING FLUID. I TEND TO HEED THIS TYPE ADVICE. IT GETS EXPENSIVE REPLACING $300 BARRELS JUST CAUSE YA' CAN'T READ OR ARE TOO STUBBORN TO LISTEN.

#1 RULE, I DON'T MIX CLEANING PRODUCTS.

Rocky's approach is the correct one.

Sweet's is just a mixture of about 2/3 10% ammonia and 1/3 liquid detergent. In the long term, the ammonia gas escapes, leaving water and detergent. You don't want detergent to build up in the barrel, and you don't want water left standing where it can rust. A clean patch mechanically removes the water and residue, and an oiled patch displaces the water, and protects the metal.

Truthfully, I never know what to believe anymore. I've taken to using Kroil after using Sweets. It really gets down in all crevices and lifts everything out. After applying Kroil I wait about ten minutes, then run clean patchs through the barrel. It's almost like I had never cleaned the rifle. I don't know where all the residual crud comes from. I finish up with a coating of Rem Oil. I don't know that it's necessary, but why take chances? Best wishes.

I use Mpro-7 to remove Sweet's or any other copper remover. One thing to remember, is Mpro-7 will remove every trace of oil from the pores of the barrel, even more so than alcohol. I always swab the bore with WD-40 after the Mpro-7. Works like a charm for me.
