2-Groove No. 4 Mark I Enfield

Many years ago, I had a very 2-groove Enfield from WWII and sold it to my older brother. I told him if he ever wanted to sell it, contact me first. He sold it to whoever. I just found another one at a very decent price. I pick it up tomorrow. All the best...

Merlow Contract Rifle

Adam,
The 2-groove Enfield was made in 1942 under contract with the British firm of Merlow according to the reference book at the gun shop. I have several No. 4 rifles made by Savage and they are marked "U.S. Property". All the best...

Gil,

Yes, my Savage is marked "US Property" which was a ruse to circumvent the neutrality laws, or whatever. I understand the 2 groove was deemed "alternate standard" and acceptable for wartime issue, you have an interesting WWII variant.

I shot the 2-groove today

Last weekend, I replaced the stock with a better one and cleaned the Enfield thoroughly. Today, I went to the range and shot from a bench at 100 yards. The rifle was in the black with the aperture sight set at 200 yards. The primers on the cases were backed out slightly. When I got home, I replaced the #1 bolt head with a #2. I will see what that does. All the best...
