91/30 Sniper Rifles
 

The local gun shop got in a half dozen Russian 91/30 sniper rifles with scopes. The rifles are post-WWII arsenal reworks with new stocks, scope mounts and scopes. The hang tag says $400.00 per copy. I liked the scope with its heavy pointed windage wires and vertical post reticle. The bores on most of these rifles were good to very good, none were pristine. I passed on these rifles. I understand why 91/30 sniper rifles are "Hot Sellers" in today's market. In 1995, in Salzburg, Austria I handled two mint ORIGINAL 91/30 Mosin sniper rifles; one had a "PE" scope and the other had a "PU" scope and both were priced at 500 Austrian Shillings, but I got the shop keeper down to 400 Shillings or $400 U.S. for each. I had the shop keeper's assurance I could walk out with both arms. I checked with the local US Consulate and got another definition on importing those (military) arms when my plane went to Boston 4 days hence. I was told I could not get the rifles through Customs. End of that story. The arms I handled were NEW and original.

A good 91/30 sniper, even if a rework, as long as it has the "PU" scope (not framilier with the PE myself) is worth what they are asking, and most of that price is the scope, not the rifle.

I can easily believe the problems Adam mentioned with customs.
With "regular" 91/30's probably not a problem, but as soon as the "sniper" got inserted, it became one of those"evil hellspawned rape-pillage-burn weapons of mass destruction"

sigh, would be nice to find some gov or custom people who have even the tiniest bit of common sense.
