What do you shoot at Elk?
Hey guys,
What do you shoot at elk? I use a .270 Win. but I'm only hunting cow elk with it so far. Thanks in advance, TJ |
I use a .300 Win. Mag with 200 grain Swift A-Frames.
I'm not saying it's the best, or this is what you need to kill an elk. I use this .300 Win Mag from coyotes, to deer/antelope, caribou, elk & moose, if I ever hunt grizz, this will also be my rifle. I do use lighter bullets for coyotes, 180 grain core lokts. |
7mm Rem. Mag w/ 160 gr. nosler partitions, or a 50 hawken mzl. If I go again in the future I'd probably use my 'new' 50 omega.

300 Remington Ultra Mag with 180gr Swift Scirroco
50 cal 440gr lead conical over 110gr Pyrodex P 100gr Wac'Em on a 7595 Gold Tip @ 279fps all seem to do the job fine;) |
300 Remington Ultra Mag with 180gr Swift Scirroco.
|
currently - .300 Win mag using 180 gr. Sierra GKs or 180 gr. Nosler Partitions.
previously - long before they were bullet proof .........when I was much younger and had much less disposable income. I used a .32 Win sp. after that I went with - .308 Win .270 Win. .260 Rem. |
I used a .300 RUM and 180gr Swift Sciroccos when I went. Now I would use my .338 RUM and 225gr Barnes TSX's because that is my favorite rifle right now.

300 Weatherby mag with 180 gr Nosler Partition handloads.

In the past it has been a 270 Win w/Hor 140s @ 3200 MV
This year it will be a 270xx shooting 170s @ 3200 MV and/or 338 RUM shooting 225s or 250s as fast and accurate as I can get'em to go. |
what to shoot elk with
Roy , I too am in Idaho , Mtn. Home . This year I harvested my 33 rd elk . All but 4 were taken with 338 Win. Mag. with 210 Nosler Part. It is my favorite cal. That said , I now have a 300 Win. Mag. Last year's bull was taken with 300 Mag. and 180 Nosler Part. PPT . Along with my age and physical ailments , I find the 300 a little more pleasant to shoot .( bad neck ) The other odd one's were taken with 30-06 , 180 gr. I still think the 338 Win. is the best cal. for elk in all conditions , with the propper bullet selection . I have never hunted Griz. ,so don't have a clue about them but I know the 338 will do .
