nameing your gun
 

The group of guys i hunt with over the years the guns they like and youse the most have been given names like eleanore or thumper or billy and was wondering if any one else does this.
I had read at one time it was real comen to name long bows and I have read storys of flint locks being given names.

I always thought that naming a gun was an affectation. Yeah, I know Daniel Boone did it, but I don't.

I sometimes refer to my .300 Win as Mjolnir, the name of Thor's hammer.

my old single shot 20 guage is often refered to as the $@*! gun.

As in "Baby its the coyote after the chickens again get the $@*! gun!"

I have only given three rifles names.

The first was, and still is, my deer killingest rifle I own, a Remington 660 in .308 Win. Seventeen der with seventeen shots. :D :cool: I call it "Ol' Farful" a bastardization of the word fearful.

Rifle #2 is called, "The Hammer". It's a Ruger tang safety Model 77 that was rebarreled to the .375 Taylor, AKA .375 Chatfield-Taylor after it's designed/inventor Robert Chatfield-Taylor, AKA the .375/338 Win. Mag. I was at the range doing some final testing with .300 gr. Sierra game-Kings when a guy who'd been asking questions about the gun and how did I make up ammo, finally asked if he could shoot it. At the range where I shoot, there was a silhouette of a pig at 75 meters for handgunners to shoot at. This bright light decided to shoot the piggy. When the smoke cleared, the piggy was about 15 yards downrange, the solid weld holding to the post broken, he's holding the rifle in one hand and rubbing his shoulder witht he other. His comment was, "Damn! That thing hits like a sledge hammer!" I figure "The Hammer" is a perfect name for the rifle.

Rifel #3, I call "The Money Pit." THis is a Ruger #1 that someone put a Remington .223 Rem. barrel on and his idea of a good looking stock. The whole package looked pretty neat for I haggled with the guy and got it for $400. Well. another almost $600 down the line, including a Hicks Accurizer, new barrel and a proper glass bedding job, the rifle will still barely stay within 1.0-1.25" at 100 yards. I bought the gun for a walkabout rifle anyway for shots of oppotunity at jack rabbits and coyote anyway, so while I would like it to be a better shooter, it does serve the purpose. I like to sit on a hillside and glass for coyotes, then do a stalk on them. Most of the time the coyotes win, but I have become a much better stalker. :D

I call my T/C 50, now 54, "Drop Em" Just seem's to fit,,,

Why bother? If I call to one, it wont make the thing come back...

only three of mine a named. my 458 win mag is called "miserable" and my 7mm mauser is called "osa". my 6,5 swedish is called swedeheart.

the 458 is not a good pasture poodle gun. but it sure puts bears to sleep. it is a 98 mauser conversion, detachable scope mounts a set of iron sights and loving care putting it together. i built it for my daughter when she hunted bears in alaska. she was very proficient with it. she could put three shots in the black on a target at 50 yds in around 4 seconds. she didn't have any more use for the gun when she moved to maryland so she gave it back to me.

my 7mm mauser was named after osa johnson. osa and her husband martin were wildlife photographers. they were from kansas originally. martin became interested in african animals so they went there to photograph them.

osas job was to protect martin so he didn't get scratched or squished by animals that didn't like having their picture taken. she must have been very good because martin died of old age in the u.s.

osas rifle and caliber of choice, following in the footsteps of walter dalrymple maitland bell, the 7mm mauser. so i built one of those. now i'm torn between my 6,5 swede and my 7mm as to my favorite rifles. choices, choices. my poor ol' 06's barely get used anymore. anybody wanna borrow an o6 in 98 mauser or a remington model 30s? they are not and "never" will be for sale.

My Australian Lithgow No 1 is named Sherrie, for the Australian Country singer, Sherrie Austin...

I know, it's goofy....

far out. if your gun is as good as the singer it's a winner. just wish she would have been more popular in the states. great voice and great music.

and she is real nice to look at too.

I have a Remington 7mm, black stock, blued barrel and a matte scope. I like to call it Black Death.
