Ordered a New Rifle......
For my son!!!
Im braggin on my kid again.... :) He is 12 this year. So far, he has 5 deer to his credit. I bought him a youth model 243 Handi Rifle. Hes now 5'9" and 140lb. Hes way outgrown that little rifle that served him so well. He got his hunter safety course last weekend. So, as a kind of welcome to manhood type gift, I decided to order him a new rifle for this year. I did alot of studying and talking to folks that know way more than I. I decided on a CZ 550 American in a 6.5x55. I have a CZ in 204 Ruger. I think it is the best made gun in the price range today. I dont know much about the cartridge, but it came highly recommended as a fine deer slayer, capable of larger game as well. I hope he likes it. Its a far cry from what I had at his age. Sorry, but had to brag. Andy |

great choice. the 6,5x55 will work all the way up to elk and do an admirable job. it'll probably work on moose and big bears also under the right circumstances. all the folks that i know that have cz rifles are extremely satisfied with them. i don't know that i would use the set trigger for hunting though. i prefer a 2 1/2 >3 pound trigger for field use. i wish you both good luck and good hunting. |
Thanks Billy.
The only time I use the set trigger is either on the bench, prairie dog towns or if Im positive I got a clean shot and not wearing gloves. Its touchy. I have the one CZ and thats been my only exposure. I wouldnt trade it for anything. Actually, I plan on owning several others soon. Andy |
.Hi Andy,
Well what can one say  6.5x55 in a CZ :p Hmmm I might be a bit older than 12 but am open for adoption :D Now this group was shot using my CZ ZKK 601 in .308. The rifle has factory bedding including a tightly inletted and bedded barrel. I took the single old style CZ sett trigger out and fitted the curved std trigger which does have a tiny bit of creep  Shot this group last sunday using a sandbag under the fore stock from the prone position this is the only 5 shots of this handload fired that day as I only had 17 loaded from a while ago. It works well on Deer:rolleyes: :- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ip30827Aug.jpg The stray is a 180 grn Winchester Silver Tip which I tried soem of, this rifle hates it spreading it over the target  A better shot could possibly have tightened it up more:o .The rifle is fitted with a 6x42 scope. My 6.5x55 rifles are not CZ's but I have used them to good effect on deer. In one a sporterised Swedish Mauser it likes the 120 Grn Speer bullet over a charge of 4350. The Mauser M96 Slide Bolt seems to prefer 140 Grn bullets. For larger game the Hornady 160 Grn RN bullets are very good. I have not yet had the chance to try the Sierra 169 Grn bullets. Reloader 19 works for me with the 160's ;) .:D CZ's are known for being accurate :) in fact have never met anyone who was not pleased with thier rifles who owned them. |
CZ great rifles!! 6.5x55 great round it is one that is deserving of alot more praise and fanfare then it gets as far as I'm comcerned. Good choice all the way around it should serve your son well for many years in the field.

Think About This
I've got a CZ550 in 6.5X55 and it's super accurate. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's too heavy. The Winchester is about right if you can find one. By the way, the 6.5X55 will drop anything in North America. For a 12 year old I'd be looking at a Tikka. Good luck.

Yeah, its heavier than I thought it would be. But, my boys big enough for it. Hes as big as alot of men, 5-9 and 140+lb.
Hes having no problem with it. He carries shootin sticks with him too. We both do. His biggest worry is that dad dont take it away from him for his own.... :D Seriously, I think I may own one identical before deer season. I love this gun. And they arent that expensive. I didnt think anyway. It was $523 with tax and shipping included. Sad to think my 25-06 may collect dust.... Andy |
Congratulations:D
Now come on where are the pictures? |
Just started new rifle project it will be a 6.5x55 AI built on a Model 700 receiver and I can't wait until it's done. Just can't say enough about the 6.5's exspecially the swede! Please do post some pics of from your sons future hunts with his swede.

Thanks fellas. It is a beautiful gun as well. I got him the standard walnut stock but it has some nice tiger like stripes in it. Very nice piece of wood. Mounted him a 4-12 Swift scope, fits nicely. Got some 129gr Hornady Spire Pts over 46gr of IMR 4350 and Fed 210 primers. Should be a good combo.
Youth deer season is the last week of Oct. Hopefully I will have some pics with him, the rifle and a big ole buck for ya. RUM, I am seriously considering, like I said, buying one just like this. OR, I have a Rem700 long action. Thinking of building a 6.5-06, possibly AI out of it. I am very impressed with the SD and BC of the 65s. No doubt. Thanks guys Andy |
rough bolt?
Do either of your CZ's have a rough action? I have a CZ 550 in .270. The first day on the range I had to force the bolt with the palm of my hand. If you had this problem, how did you, or how would you, fix it.
Good Hunting, TJ |
No problems at all. Are you shooting handloads? Sounds like a sizing problem?
I have no idea. I havent had problem one with our two..... Andy |
