Military Surplus Arms for PA Deer.

The sumacs are turning red on the hillsides and its time to get ready for the PA deer season. I like military surplus arms for deer since most shots in PA are 100 yards, or less.

My favorite military arms are: MkIII, P-17, Kar98k, Swiss M1911, M58 Madsen, M1909 Argentine, M39 Finn and M44 Jap Carbine.

I need to dig out last year's ammo and trek to the backyard bench to make sure the rifles are zeroed. I reload the empty cases and am "good to go" the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Who else hunts with vintage military rifles?

Hello Adam, I enjoy getting my milsurps out for hunting as well.

In the past i have used: #1mk3, #4mk1, 91/30, m44, turk mauser, and my hakim ( hate to lug it around but it does a good job).

Need to take the Ljungman out this year but i'll have to do the same thing with it as i do with the hakim when deer hunting.
load magazine, chamber round, remove magazine, otherwise the wardens get bent out of shape since I dont have them blocked for 3 rounds only. (I think it's 3 rounds limit, might be 5 though, cant remember but to play it safe i just do it that way).

gumpokc,

We are not allowed to use semi-auto rifles for PA deer hunting. Thus, my Garands, Hakims, ABL FN M49s, Tokarev 40s and SKSs stay at home in deer season.

I like the MkIII .303 for PA deer. As you may know, in 1916, the Brits dropped the magazine cutoff as well as the windage adjustable rear sight. I concur with the dropping of the cutoff, but it must have been "Military Intelligence" to drop the windage adjustable rear sight. Happily, I have several MkIIIs. In 1923, the Brits renumbered their rifles and the MkIII became the "No.1 MkIII".

I prefer a military arm for hunting. That started with my first Milsurp in 1958.

Some of us prefer surplus arms

I have a number of surplus arms and most of them make it afield at least one day a year. I really like the Krags, U.S. 1917s, Springfields, Mausers and Enfields the best. I would like to take the K31 Swissa nd Swede 1938 out this year. Take care...

Yeah Adam i know what you mean, here in oklahoma they aren't real happy about it, but as long as it is either a factory small magazine semiauto, or has some method to limit the rounds in the mag (which i simply dont use the mag) there isn't anything they can do here at the moment.

NOw varmit hunting, i can use the mags all i want, but i only go out after coyotes and such, when they start getting into the cattle in SW oklahoma on friends property.

Hakim does a _great_ job on coyotes, as long as you can keep them in ironsight range.
