How many of you out here shoot and own a custom or semi custom rifle? If so please share as to what caliber and why you went with a custom and the caliber that you did.

I have a few...

When you do a custom rifle, you get exactly what you want: The barrel contour you choose, the chamber length you want, etc.

If you're going to do a custom, be sure you want a project. And assume that when you get the whole thing together, you will have some work ahead of you chasing down a subtle problem or two. If you're patient, shop carefully, and do a lot of the simple work yourself, you can end up with a custom rifle that costs about the same as a commercial item. One of my projects (Yugo Mauser in 6.5x55) ended up costing me a total of $250, plus optics. And it's a darn good rifle, with a new barrel and trigger.

If you just want a nice gun, go buy one. It costs the same or maybe a lot less, and it's a LOT faster and easier.

Why did I do it? Momentary insanity. All four times.

Project 1: 30-06 Rem barrel on Turkish Mauser. Intent was a dependable, all around hunting rifle. Turned out nice.

Project 2: 6.5x55 Pac-Nor #4 contour on Sears FN action. Couldn't turn down the original 30-06 ($185, then sold the barrel for $50). Made it a 6.5 because I already had two 30-06s, and love the 6.5x55. Ideal pronghorn gun.

Project 3: 7x57 Zastava. Thought the cartridge was neat. Didn't understand how neat until I loaded it to modern pressure. Now it replaces Project 1 as my main all-around rifle.

Project 4: Scored a nice Yugo Mauser for $85. Fixed it up with a scope and such, mostly so I would have something to loan. Worked good (2 1/2" five-shot groups), but I never used it. Stumbled across a never fired 6.5x55 lightweight barrel for it, and it became my SIL's second rifle (grandkids coming up).

I have completed a lot of custom rifles to get both the caliber and the action I wanted. They are as follows:

-F.N. commercial Mauser that was a 6mm-.284 and I bought for $75 became a .280 Remington

-VZ-24 sporter that was a .30-06 and cost me $95 became a .257 Roberts

-VZ-24 that I bought for $10 with a ruined barrel bacame a .280 Remington

-1903 Springfield sporter bacame a .280 Remington

-1903 Springfield sporter became a .270 Winchester

-F.N. commercial Mauser .30-06 with a 20-inch barrel became a .280 Remington

I should share my progects also I guess.

#1. A Model 700 classic in .300 WM converted to a .264WM with a 28" fluted #5 contour Broughton 5C barrel with a Darroll Holland competition recoil lug and fiberglass stock. (stand rifle)

#2. A Model 700 classic in 6.5x55 converted to a 6.5-06AI with a 24" #5 contour Shillen SS match select barrel with same stock and recoil lug as above. (spot and stalk rifle)

#3. A model 700 CDL in .243 converted to a .260Rouge with 24" fluted #3 contour Krieger CM barrel barrel with the same stock and recoil lug.( weighs 7lbs. with scope and all it's my carry all day rifle)

To many to count.
If Joe comes through with the P-14, I'll have another. He11 , I'll have another anyhoo, one way or another.

Mine are built on contender frames.

Nice custom ambidex carbine stock with high grade walnut thumbhole stock.

Bullberry 22 match and 7-30 waters in 16 inch configurations.

A VVG's 223 20 inch barrel.

And a custom 357 max 23 inch barrel just added from coyote gun work in Indiana. I have yet to shoot this barrel yet as i had to order the brass and they no longer make factory rounds for this.

I like to play with wildcats so I have several unfactory guns. Smallest is the .17 AH and the largest is the .411 Hawk, with the latest being a .22-6mm, a real nice reach out and touch them coyote rifle.

Well I have several bespoke made rifles but none of them did I have built, silly really because one of them for what I paid for it it seems that I could have gone to the maker and ordered one to be built as I wanted .... Oh well I have a beautiful one off rifle that truely is one off as they decided it was a bit much hassle wise to get it to feed the rimmed 30-30 case so said that they will not make another like it :D :-

And then the one in progress, a Mannlicher Model 1903 which has a new barrel in 6.5x54MS now I need a nice new figured wood stock for it ;)

I did start to have a rifle built and got all the specs worked out with teh Gunsmith when the parent firm closed the operation down :(

I just fell into a Remington M700 with the grey laminated wood stock. I am going to have it rebarreled from 7mm RUM to a .300 RUM. I have already adjusted the trigger pull and in the process of refinishing the stock from gloss to matte. The reciever will be pinned with a new recoil lug and then pillar bedded. It will be nice when I'm done. On A side not why don't some of you fellows post pictures of these customs they sound pretty intresting and would be nice to look at also. Myself being computer illiterate I will talk my wife into posting pictures of my rifles.

i have a nosler model 48. it shoots 3/4" out of the box, with any darn ammo i put in it. this is why i love them. if i had more money i would get an ed brown "damara" in 7mm-08, but i don't so i won't. i can't understand why a "kimber with match grade everything" doesn't shoot even close to as good.

gotta be the barrel i guess.!!

btw, my noser is in 270 wsm with a very light weight barrel, the whole gun weighs 6.5 lbs.

i know i know the kimbers and everything else shoot 1-1.5" on average, and cost 1000 dollars less, but still, come on.
