Monarch ammo from Academy?

Yesterday while in an Academy sporting goods I spotted Monarch brand ammo. Looks Russian just to look at it, but the price differences are staggering.

Examples.

30-30 winchester 150 grain
Remington - $16.88 a box
Monarch - $10.49 a box

270 winchester 130 grain
Remington - $19.88 a box
Remington reduced recoil - $32.88 a box
Monarch - $13.55 a box.

Thats the two I remember off the top of my head.

Anybody know if monarch ammo is worth the cost of the carboard box? Just curious for plinking/varminting

I purchased a box last year. It worked fine for me. Nothing negative to say about it.

It's Russian and is a laqured steel, non reloadable case.

Sorry i didn't see this earlier

hey sorry this didn't catch my eye earlier GOB but i actually work at Academy here in abilene and have now for more than a year and can give you a little insight on it. Monarch is made in serbia with there powder which is a little dirtier but seems to shoot fine? basically in the rifle ammunition the brown boxes are ok for hunting or plinking. The brown boxes are brass casings with soft lead points. The blue boxes which you can get your .223, .308, 7.62*39 and maybe others depending on you Academy are the steel casings with laquer coating are you basic military style of ammo and are good for just blowing thru some rounds.

From what i hear the brown box stuff is good for shooting but doens't deliver real consistant groupings like your higher end ammo but in the 30-30 it shoots good enough to hunt with.

hope this helps...if you have any other questions just let me know
