My Quest for a homemade deer
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to harvest a deer with all homemade archery equipment. I have harvested 35 deer with a bow but all have been with modern equipment. Last year I up'd the challenge a bit and began my quest to do it with a Homemade bow. Back in 1988, I made an English longbow with a walnut riser, leather grip and a flemish string, I made string silencers from a tanned raccoon tail. It is tillered to be 45 pounds at 28 inches.

I crested them and fletched them with the feathers from a turkey I shot. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...cedars9996.jpg I made my broadheads from field points and band saw blade material. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...oadheads91.jpg I used leather to make a finger tab, arm guard and field quiver. I decorated them with leather tooling, antler buttons and bear claws. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...armguard93.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...armguard94.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../hquiver98.jpg My camo is homemade (my son is modeling) http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...4/camo_981.jpg I made my own portable climbing stand and ladder stand. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...4/climber3.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../climber96.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../climber99.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...akeladder3.jpg I made the safety harness from seat belt material and metal buckles. (and I tested it) http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...4/harness4.jpg |
The hunting knife is made from an old sawsall blade and a deer antler with deer rawhide.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...boneknife2.jpg I get the rawhide from working the hides of the deer I shoot. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7154/hide5.jpg I practice into a homemade target. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...bag_target.jpg If I am successful, I will turn my deer into homemade sausage and jerky. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...s/fulldraw.jpg |
Now, that is really doing everything 'home made'!
I don't think I've ever seen anyone make a climbing stand before. |
Well RC.
Guess you have done all you can for now. Seasons coming up soon though. Hope ya get one. I made a climbing stand way back yonder. Worked real well but it was made outta angle iron. Heavy ...but killed many many deer out of it. My son made one out of Aluminum angle in a shop class in school years ago. He and I both shot a lot of deer out of it too...as did my daughter. My grandson is using the same stands even today on my farm back east. The steel one stays on a favorite tree:rolleyes: :D
