Got back a few minutes ago...Man, Pine Beetle have done a
number on my end of my GMU....DEAD. We arrived Thursday morning, set camp and did some recons that afternoon and Friday.Pines were brown...Aspens were bare...no ground greenies...no Elk Bites on Aspens....
Saw a few (very few) deer...couple of cows ...no bulls....couple of
Moose cows. I did pop 2 blues with pistol. They were good eating.
FEW hunters....walked...sat....glassed....saw nothing shoot able!
I had heard of the big winter kill off...didn't believe it....think I'm looking for a new area down in the San Juans!!!!
Had a wonderful time though, great partner! Only consolation is no one else was killing anything......gonna spend tomorrow cleaning and storing gear.
Guess thats why it's called hunting!!!!LOL

Hang in there lol I was out with my son in the Black Hills and so far nothing either but the season re-opens in Dec and we should get one then

No Real Stories
 

Spent a week in the southern side of the Sierra Madre east of Baggs, WY. Were trying to contact elk bulls for meaning relationships! Great camping, too warm for elk hunting. The trees are more than 60% bug killed. That area can't help but burn in the next few years. Hunted around Singer Peak and drainages from there. No bugling! Moon so bright it would have possible to hunt at night. Elk were obviously feeding at night and sticking to the dense timber during the day. Will take snow to make it huntable weather.

I'd post my hunting report but it would sound exactly like all of yours...had fun, good company, didn't shoot nothin. Gonna give another try this weekend in a different spot

Some folks are calling those dead conifers "Colorado Redwoods". They are sad...
Too bad you didn't see any bulls. I didn't get a shot at a cow... but just wait 'til next year!

MtnMike2, Those Colorado Redwoods are more appropriately labeled "Environmental Redwoods". The environmentalists are probably more responsible for the terrible outbreak since they wouldn't allow harvest of mature trees. To them, a huge fire is much more acceptable. They certainly will be satisfied. I really don't believe those folks know that trees have a finite life span and if they aren't harvested by man, they will be harvested by nature.:(
