TEST FIRE: Ruger Mark I and Mark II .22 pistols

By happenstance I became the owner of both a Ruger Mark I and a Mark II pistol. When it comes to .22 caliber handguns, I have been revolver-oriented for lo these MANY years. Now I have "New Think."

The Mark I is a heavy barrel with adjustable sights and that was an easy Zero. The Mark II has fixed sight that did not shoot where it looked until I drfited the rear sight and staked it in place for a 25 yard zero.

Unfortunately, semi-auto pistols are illegal for hunting in PA. With the zeros of both Ruger pistols, I can see an application for small game hunting and for chucks here on the farm. I like these Rugers more everyday. Who else likes Ruger .22 pistols?

bought it to join a league when I was a club member ...but never found the time. Have used it sparringly for hunting and am happy with its performance

not so much when used with bird shot around the house

Section 1. Section 2308(b) of Title 34 of the Pennsylvania

Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:

§ 2308. Unlawful devices and methods.

(b) Exceptions.--The provisions of subsection (a) shall not

10
apply to:

11
(1) (i) Any archery sight or firearm's scope which

12
contains and uses any mechanical, photoelectric,

13
ultraviolet or solar-powered device to solely illuminate

14
the sight or crosshairs within the scope.

15
(ii) Except as otherwise provided under subparagraph

16
(iii), no archery sight or firearm's scope shall contain

17
or use any device, no matter how powered, to project or

transmit any light beam, infrared beam, ultraviolet light

2
beam, radio beam, thermal beam, ultrasonic beam, particle

3
beam or other beam outside the sight or scope onto the

4
target.

(iii) (A) A flashlight or spotlight may be mounted

6
on a firearm to take furbearers if the sole source of

7
power for the flashlight or spotlight is contained

8
within the flashlight or spotlight or on the person.

9
(B) For the purposes of this subparagraph, a

10
flashlight or spotlight mounted on a firearm shall

11
not include a device that projects a beam of laser

12
light to indicate the intended point of impact for

13
one or more projectiles discharged from the firearm.

(2) (i) Any political subdivision, its employees or

15
agents, which has a valid deer control permit issued

16
under section 2902(c) (relating to general categories of

17
permits).

(ii) Any licensed hunter in cities of the first

19
class, while hunting on private property and using a bow

20
and arrow or crossbow, using bait to attract deer for

21
removal as provided by commission regulations.

(iii) Any licensed hunter in special regulation

23
areas, other than counties of the second class, using

24
bait to attract deer for removal as provided by

25
commission regulations.

(3) Any artificial or manufactured turkey blind

27
consisting of all manmade materials of sufficient density to

28
block the detection of movement within the blind from an

29
observer located outside of the blind.

(4) Any natural or manmade nonliving bait used to

attract coyotes for hunting or trapping.

(5) Any electronic or mechanical device used to attract

coyotes for hunting or trapping.

(6) Any decoy used in the trapping or hunting of

furbearers.

(7) Any semiautomatic rimfire rifle, .22 caliber or

less, for the taking of coyotes, foxes or woodchucks.

I bought my Mark 2 a bunch of years ago. Its the target model with a 6 7/8" barrel. I had the trigger replaced, and it shoots the lights out now. Its my favorite handgun and is always in the bag when I go to the range. Really fun to shoot and it doesn't cost much to shoot. I have to ruger single six 22's that I like a lot as well. I really like the Ruger 22's can beat them

I youse to shoot small game with mine

I have a standard Mk II that I bought new several years ago....I didn't like the fixed sights either, so I went and bought a set of Millet adjustable target sights with an orange front and a white outlined rear. I've taken some small game with mine (mostly rabbits) and I put an nice set of wood grips on mine when the plastic ones broke.
FWIW, I found it difficult to find a holster that would fit it with the new sights.....then I found a copy of a Walther P-38 flap military holster, and problem solved.:)

I like my Mark II, now that it is zeroed. Many military flap holsters should handle a Mk II ok. I went by Walmart last week for more .22 ammo and found out they had no "bricks" of Remington LR Hollowpoints. Yesterday I checked back; they got in an ammo shipment on Tuesday. All the Federal LRHP "bricks" were gone and they had several Remingtons on hand. I last paid $12.97 for a Rem brick and paid $16.97 yesterday.

I think you'll enjoy the Mk II Adam, I've also got one, acquired many years ago and shoot it just as a plinker. I 'painted' the front sight with whiteout for my aging eyes, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

I have a Mark I and it is fantastic. It is a Department issue and can't count the deer I have put down with this gun that were hit by cars ect. It even has a mountain lion to its credit that was hit by a car and ran off.
They are a great gun !

Forgot to add that mine has the S@W # 83 holster and it fits perfect.
