Squirrel load?

Thinking about taking my trade musket out and trying to put a few squirrels in the frying pan. What do you all think a good load would be for fox & grey squirrels? I'm thinking 60-70 grains of FFg under a 1 1/8 0z charge or #5 or #6 shot (#5 preferable).
Anything wrong with my thinking? Any other suggestions? The musket is cylinder bored.
Thanks in advance.....

Mr. 16 gauge,

In my .50 smoothbore flinter I use 75 grains of 2F Goex and the same VOLUME, per the charger, of #6 shot. I use .50 caliber bore buttons as wads over powder and shot. The T/C Handbook describes various shot loads.

It depends

I have a .54 caliber (28 gauge) Green Mountain smoothbore barrel in a Hawken stock. I use about 70 grains of FFG, 28 gauge plastic was cup, 1 oz. of shot and a .54 bore button. Works well on clay pigeons, Hope to use it on squirrels at Adam's place this fall. Rake care...
Joe
