Checkering cradle?
 

Does anyone know where I can find plans to make an inexpensive checkering cradle? I have a .22 that I would like to refinish the stock on, and thought it might be a good opportunity to try some checkering.

I`ve done most of my checkering setting infrount of the TV with the stock on my lap.

I'll take a picture of one of mine and send it to you. Not hard to make.. PITA to checker though.. Only checkering I do anymore is recuts of old..or cutting Remington Pressed..

Mr. 16 gauge, I do custom stocks and checkering; been doing it for about 30 years. By the time you make a cradle, buy the tools, do the job, and pay for the bourbon you will need afterward, you will find it is less expensive to have some one do a simple 22 stock checkering for you. Of course, if you have some masochistic tendencies, you should try it for yourself. After 30 years of it, nothing is very frightening. One absolute thing to remember: checker under incadescent lightiing. If you try with flourescent, you will never have shadows to show you the lines. Drives me nuts to try that.

Checkering will drive ya absolutely nuts..unless you are a masochist and likes pain..Mental at the very least. BTW I tried to send a pic but it was returned.. Now if ya just gotta checker..could I interest you in some checkering tools;) ?? I just recut an old M-70 stock with a veiner. It had been refinished and they hit the checkering a little with the sandpaper.. Looks ok now. Had to fit it to an old M-70 300H&H.. Going to put a repro Winchester recoil pad on it..make it look closer to original. Have an original but it is a little stiff after more than 50 yrs
