care of rotary magazines?
 

Any tips/tricks that I should know about when cleaning my rotary magazine for my Ruger 10/22? Right now I'm just basically wiping down the outside and the follower as much as I can from the outside.

I will be going to Cabelas this morning to buy my son-in-law a 10/22 in stainless for his birthday. He had wanted a semi-auto and my daughter is going halves with me on it. I am sure the magazine is the same as your rifle, and all I ever do with a clip is wipe them down with a silicone cloth.

If you get a very large amount of wax, powder, or lead build up in them you can pull the magazines apart (Those that will pull apart there are some that just won't) and use a q-tip with a soft patch wrapped around it to gently wipe out the magazine. Do NOT use anything hard, sharp or abrasive on it and don't oil it. Pule it back together. Whalla. Clean magazine. I use the Ruger clear acrylic mags and they work like a champ, don't really need cleaning (just like the black ones) but at least you can see when and if they do become dirty.

I like you wipe them the best I can however I use compressed air to blow them out ever so often. I'm afarid to take on apart.

I wipe my 10/22 mags off with a cloth dampened with CLP that I wipe the rifle down with and am done with it.

If there is a problem with the Ruger mags functioning I rinse them out in kerosene, use the air compressor and then a drop of oil, actually more like 1 drip.

Ruger 10/22 mags are pretty close to maintenance free.
I have taken them apart, but I really didn't need to (I dropped 2 into a creek).
An occasional wipe of the steel parts with an oily cloth is all you need to do, unless they somehow get full of crud.

Mine do by the end of season by being carried in my vest pocket. Should empty the vest out periodically and clean it so I don't have to clean the mags.

When shooting good quality cci ammo (or anything else that is light on grease) I don't usually have to clean the mags very often at all (maybe once every couple of years if that often) When shooting really cheap bulk ammo that has thicker grease and dirtier powder I may have to clean them one once a year to once every six months depending on how much I shoot.

Either way you should never have to be cleaning them out every time you shoot, hunt, etc.

The "RimfireCentral" forum site has instructions on the cleaning, disassembly/reassembly and adjustment of Ruger magazines. I did it with one of mine - but haven't really seen the advantage in it - my four other magazines still work fine and I just wipe them off occasionally. The feed lips get a bit crusty with certain ammo - a good wipe off seems all it needs.
