I was down at the play area with my kids today around 4:00. On the way there I saw a single doe right by the play area and she was pretty large. Saw her out in the grass field earlier in the day eating. I was wondering why she didn't go very far when she ran into the thicket as we approached. As the kids were playing and I was sitting on a bench watching them, I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. I thought it was the doe coming back, but it was an 8 point buck getting up out of the brush he was laying in. We must have passed 10 to 15 yards away from him. When he got up, he kept the brush between he and I and he moved pretty quietly for as thick as it was. He walked away. About 15 minutes later, he came back pretty quietly. Again, he kept the brush between he and I and this time I could see the doe pretty clear. Easy shot with a slug gun. I tried to walk a 40 yard circle around the buck so I could get a clear pic of him with my phone, but as I started to reach the "shooting lane", he made sure the brush remained between he and I. Just as I was about to get into the shooting lane, he walked off into the really, really thick stuff.
These guys don't get big because they are stupid. The dumb ones are killed early on in life.
Keep at it. Eventually you will get him. Several years ago, I had a decent size buck come running my way one morning because an inexperienced hunter decided to get out of his stand early and he spooked the buck. I had the crappiest spot that morning because I got to the farm late and everybody was already out. This buck was bedding down right by this guy and I ended up killing him at 60 or so yards while I was wearing a full suit of blaze orange and just sitting on the ground against a fence post. The newbie started giving me crap about my reloads later in the day, and then thought better about it.
Good luck to you. Wish I were out hunting.
