Another M1 Garand
 

I was in a gun shop scanning the used gun racks and saw two M1 Garands and both were overpriced. One had a sanded stock and a slick glass-like finish more suitable for a honor guard weapon. The other was still original, was made by Harrington & Richardson in 1955 and looked like new. I haggled a good bit and took the H&R. I paid too much, but rifles in this condition are getting hard to find and command even high prices. All the best...

My first issue back in the 50s was a H&R, brings back memories. Mine looked like it was used in most invasions in WWII, but functioned well.

Sooo, WHAT did you pay for the H&R? I paid $500 for my last one and guess I have enough Garands on the heap. I just got another ABL M49 8x57MM. For an encore I got a Hakim for $175 with VG stock and mint bore. The seller of both arms tossed in a .30 caliber can of NC 8mm Ball that was Boxer primed. It pays to read the "Penny Saver" weekly paper.

Are any of the DCM M-1's any good? Thought about it from time to time but hate buying something unseen.

I am happy with my DCM Garand I got in 1981 for $117.50. DCM is now the CMP and the prices for Very Good Garands are near a grand. As Bruce Canfield points out in his Garand book, most Garands went through at least one rebuild. My 3-million serial number DCM Garand has a new barrel dated 1967. I assume it was a Vietnam era rebuild.

CMP guarantees rifles "Safe to shoot", or at least that is what my 1981 paperwork says.

I was alway nervous with the "shoot well" statement. I have some clunkers that "shoot well". I remember when JFK ordered his M1 thru the DCM he managed to snage a match rifle. Immagine that.

I saw a Winchester M1 Garand today in a shop in Wellsboro. It was Very Good+ in and out for $975.00. The serial number was 3 million+. I made an offer and left my name and phone number. The shop also had a few badly DINGED Russians; an SKS, a 91/30 and a M38 with nasty drilled holes in the receiver ring for a scope attachment.

The shop owner asked me, "What caliber are these Russian guns?" I told him, and he wrote the information on the hang tags.

I was in a gun shop last week where they had a beat up 1903-A3 priced higher than a beat up M1 Garand. I asked if that was correct and was assured the prices were accurate. I left the shop empty-handed. Take care....
