The Boy Strikes Again!

My 9 year old killed this bird on Saturday. We had 8 jakes in front of us and the best we could do was 45 yards on account of the full strutting decoy I had set up. They wanted nothing to do with that.

I recently purchased an Indian Creek, Black Diamond Strike choke (NWTF world champion still target record holder for the last 3, heck maybe 5 years) and it was worth every penny. (like $90 after shipping!) His Bantam 20 gauge patterned better than my 12 gauge at 40 yards! Well better until I decided to get a new choke for my own after I saw what his did. 48 BB's in a 8" plate at 40 yards.

Anyhow, I'd rather have them much closer but I knew his gun could do it, and 1 1/4" oz of #6's at 45 yards and this bird didn't know what hit him. Rack another one up, now out to get my daughter one.

I can't tell you how many birds we had at 40 yards last year and I would not let him shoot b/c the factory chokes just wouldn't pattern. Heck why should it....it's a 20 gauge! Unbelievable what the can do now a days, making 20's shoot just as good as 12's. I'd recommend this choke to anyone...save your money on buying 2 or 3 $30 chokes and buy an Indian creek...they'll stretch your barrel IF you ever need to use it, plus make your pattern more uniform at those closer distances.

My kids eat this stuff up. In fact I have to mitigate the fights on who gets to go hunting next! Unfortunately the law says I can only have one with me at a time hunting, or they'd both be there. I seem to get to hunt less for myself anymore, but in reality I wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, I feel more successfull if my kids come home with a big grin on their face than I ever did pulling the trigger or releasing an arrow.
Monday was my daughter's first opportunity out and even though we didn't see a bird, she was extactic to see 13 deer (and to not have to ride the school bus in the morning).
I wish I had that opportunity at age 6...the way these kiddos are going, they'll both have 8-10 deer and/or turkey under their belt before I was ever allowed to start hunting.
