Came across a suspect shotgun in a relatives effects after his death last week. It appeared it had a short barrel so took no chances. As it was a JC Higgins bolt 12ga of no real value and a lot of possible trouble, it now sleeps in the land fill. Did you know, a Saws-All will cut a shotgun right in half, action, stock, barrel and all, slick as a whistle? You just start 3/4 of an inch back from the front of the action, with the bolt out, and instant scrap metal hits the floor.

You guys pay attention to those junk guns a relative may have in a house. Do not just throw a rusty hulk in your vehicle and haul it home.:eek:

How short was that shotgun barrel? If it was 18 inches, it was not an NFA firearm. I know of another bolt action 12 gauge that had a bulged barrel. A hacksaw quickly cut it to 19 inches. The saw person measured twice and cut once. A dowel was run down the barrel and marked-YEP, it was NINETEEN inches. NO Problem here.

This was a suspected short barrel as possession of an unregistered short barrel rifle or shotgun by an individual is a violation. To my knowledge there is no exception to the law. When you are off in distant places without your barrel vice and you find a suspected short barrel, it is a very good idea not to transport or possess the suspect gun past the application of a good Saws-All. A real bad day would be to get stopped in East Overshoe by a local and have them find an illegal anything in your vehicle.

If you happen to go to a deceased person's residence to clean out the place, watch the guns carefully and do not pack up and transport anything illegal. Just make very sure it is demilled before being discarded. Cutting the chamber (saw or torch) is about the only accepted method available to an individual, right on the spot. In this case, I cut the suspected short barrel gun in half through the chamber and barrel, one stroke.

This post is intended as a heads up. We are all getting older and we are faced with more and more relatives going. So just be careful of what you pick up.

I cleaned out a house for a friend and came across a Model 12 with a barrel of about 12 inches in length that was under a sofa. I merely removed the barrel and left for home. It was a challenge to find a replacement barrel, but it now has one and is a fine gun. So it depends. All the best...

ok so here is that bad news. Sears still pays $65 a piece for the bolt itself from the 12 gauge version of that shotgun because it was recalled way back when (they offered $160 a bolt up until around 5 years ago). Only the 12's were recalled, and that was due to a weakness when used with anything other than field or light field loads. The receiver, stocks, mag tube, etc are worth (in used good condition) around $55 in parts if sent to numrich without bolt or barrel. The firing pin itself will bring around $40 if sold on gunbroker and numrich will still give you around $40 for the rest of the parts without barrel, bolt, or firing pin. And last I looked a new (used) barrel for that old shotgun from numrich would run you around $50.

Sooooo you COULD have gotten around $145 for it for the parts, or could have saved it to use with light fields loads only for around $50.

oh and by the way a buddy of mine inherited a single shot 12 gauge years back that had a pistol grip cut from the stock and a 6" barrel. Barrel was a old damascus relic. The pistol grip got tossed, the barrel got made into a heck of a hunting knife by a blacksmith and a new stock set and new barrel for the gun ran him in the $100 range. He still squirrel and birds hunts with that fine old gun.

Wish I had known you had it. Would have asked you to pound the barrel flat with a hammer and sell it to me for $10 for forge food. Not damascus in the old JC Higgins, but still REALLY good knife steel.

The SUSPENSE is killing me. HOW SHORT WAS THAT SHOTGUN BARREL? If it was 18 inches, or longer, you had no sweat.

I agree with GOB, the parts would have rendered some revenue, even if the barrel was UNDER 18 inches. A landfill is a poor place to seek return on investment. Also, spend a buck and get a yardstick at Walmart, LOL!

I also had an Uncle pass away a few years ago and every single Rem M870 shotgun was under 18". Took the old barrels off (and mashed them) and ordered 4 new barrels and have been using them since.
