Well, I'm no expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd almost bet that the second encounter involved a tom who already had a bunch of hens with him, and if that was the case, he'd be pretty tough to drag away from what he already had. That's not to say that you couldn't, it just means that it's tougher to do. Welcome to the board and to the turkey experience.
