All joking aside, there is an element of truth to it.
Lots of critters will be drawn to salt licks for the trace elements they unknowingly crave. There are places where the rocks are licked white by animals, and that's where (allegedly) those blocks are mined.
It's considered baiting and illegal in many places to place cattle salt blocks out for deer. Why? because it DOES attract deer.
I'd just question whether it's better (assuming it's legal) to buy some expensive and gimmicky "trophy" salt when a cattle block would probably work as well.
And I'm not even opening a discussion about whether all this is ethical.
