I was only a young know-it-all at the time of watergate. I remember running my mouth in front of my father, repeating things I had heard in the news and tv. My father was never very political, but I still vividly remember the butt chewing I recieved at the time. Basically was told to learn what I was talking about before running my trap off.
That said, I really can't see Deepthroat as a "hero". From what I have read so far, he probably did break the laws in how he went about the whole affair, and it seems his record shows his lack of support of other ammendments of the constitution, while being so ready to support the 1st Ammendment.
Right or wrong, as in all politics I'm sure he chose whom and where to grind his ax.
And for his family, that smile and glint in their eyes is all about $$$
