Billy,
Once you get a German work permit, after one calender year you can no longer work for US Forces, and the LAW STATES YOU (THE MILITARY) CAN NOT TELL THE ETSing SERVICE MEMBER!!! It is a stipulation of the SOFA agreement.
But if you (I mean me) return to country of origin AFTER you cancil your work permit for one year, he/she may apply for a USAEUR employment position.
It's been a full year and I'm going to try for a low to no levil job, maybe even a PX

Before I go back to the German economy.
On my wife.........................well she's not the same woman I married. The US went from 'a possiablity' to "Not a chance in hell" I don't really see much of a future for us. But if I am in Germany should we get divorced, I will have almost equall rights to my children.
German law states a parent MUST allow full visitation of foregin parent. But the Germans signed this agreement with the US, just as they honored the European Common rule of no parent shall take a child from country of birth (provided the child is a citizen of that country) with out full written concent of both parents. I know I have seen the forms many times.
So by law she has to allow me to bring my kids to the US, but the EC loophole lets her say no..........................so the Germans can give lip service "It's not our fault."
I could tell you horror stories of American friends who got shafted.
And Koenig Luedwig Dunkel rules!!!!
followed by Veltins, then Warsteiner, and the list is rounded off by Zirndorfer Hell.
And our wine consist of any red Greek Imiglikos, or Romainian Scharchmadtchen, or Semi-sweet Spainish red............"Now that's good drinkin'" Gotta wash that gyros and fetta down with something!"
