laser engraving

We had a mold for medical parts laser engraved recently, #'s 1-64, and a little information from the results. The numbers were put in less than 1/32 of an inch high, you can get maybe 6 on a fireing pin, round like a shell case. Problem is they are put in a burn dot at a time, the readability is not a smooth line. The 2 and the Z, S or a 5, 3 and 8 get tough to see even under 20 power glass. To increase the letter quality burning steel gets to be very hard, or you put it in less deep, we were only about .002 to make it plain in plastic. To expect it to imprint soft metal primer, I do not know the physics involved with an even imprint at time of fireing?
