There are several rules about internet dating and most of the reputable ones will tell you what they are. I know Match.com did.
One of the rules is always to make the first couple of dates in public, and if possible, with friends. I tended to e-mail and talk on the phone to these women for a while before meeting them out and the first dates would always be at a public place. Another thing was never to give out your actual home phone or the address where you live. Needless to say, I only went out on more than one date with 4 of the woman, and only one made it past 3 dates and she is now my wife.
Anything in life can be dangerous. The same thing can be said about meeting a person in a bar for a one night stand. Who knows what that person is like. Yet plenty of people do that in life. Hell, a lot of people get into a car with somebody they really don't know too well.
