We all know the 270 is an excellent deer(and occasionally elk) cartridge, and if the shooter is capable, it will take deer beyond 500 yards. However, even in the almighty Remington model 700, a 30-06 has always grouped better than a 270(even with its bore size). When you say "try every handload or factory loading: every group from every rifle" that is what puts the 270 down. The 30-06 has a better selection of factory ammunition, and performs excellently with anything you feed into it. 270 is more sensitive, and once again, just less accurate. It's quite unimpressive to hear "every group from every rifle." Makes it sound like you need a high price custom gun to make it perform as well as the 30-06. The 270 is a strictly hunters rifle. I like to shoot prairie dogs and such at long ranges for fun, so I personally like more reliability in a cartridge for its accuracy, not an unneeded niche between 25- and 30-06.
