They sort of go hand in hand. 40 lbs is plenty to kill a whitetail deer if you are shooting under 30 yards. Don't let that bother you though as most whitetail deer are shot between 18 and 22 yards. If you plan on shooting farther, you need to shoot more poundage (create more kinetic energy) with a heavier arrow to consistently pass thru game animals. Also, if you're shooting 40 to 45 lbs I would wait for broadside shots and stay away from bone structure all together. You will have no problems if you do that.
