I have read a little about the situation and the movie. I beleive the man was mentally ill, probably manic depressive. As for the unfortunate woman, the same explanation that fits women who are talked into violent situations by husbands and boyfriends fits her.
It is always sad whenever one these people find out where we are in the food scale when in the wilderness.
