You know, that big chunk of NA just north of the United States, which is very much anti gun owner, especially pistols!

Sorry for your predicament Xride. You might try to get some on your next trip to the States (if ever) or you'll just have to bite the bullet (no pun intended).

I have a friend on Vancouver Island, and hear about the gun BS all the time. He had to borrow a rifle to shoot an injured bear in his yard last fall. Of course the guy he borrowed it from also had the License for bear and just waited for the phone call. It had a broken leg, and probably fell out of an Arbutus tree while after berries. He took ALL of his guns to friends in the States when the last registration fiasco started.
