I just did some trigger work on an old tang safety ruger 77. You have to get an aftermarket sear to get any decent kind of pull out of one. I used a Rifle Basix replacement (you can get them through Cabelas for about $40). This did wonders for that rifle. If there is a way to adjust the trigger without replacement parts, I don't know what it is.
