as another WW2 vingette in the same theme, but the other side of the coin... declassified documents from the defeated Japanese government revealed that one of the main reasons that invasion was not touted for Australia, the Pacific U.S. or even of Hawaii in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbour was the well-known local traditions of owning and using firearms. The Tojo Military machine was extremely leary of taking on an enemy territory "where every bush, rock-pile and ditch could conceal a rifle barrel in the hands of a trained shot". They were way too used to invading and devastating nations full of unarmed citizens...
