Your Mom is doing it right. Main thing is to use hot water, no detergent, when cleaning up, a non-metalic scrubbered to remove food particles, then heat skillet a minute or two and add your bacon/lard for seasoning. It might take a little extra time, but it's worth every minute, in the food thats prepared later, and one good thing about them, they will last your life time, your childrens life time and grand children and great-grand children.
It's well worth it !
