In Missouri, our squirrel season opens June 1st. But most of us don't hunt them much until fall and they begin to feed on hickory and walnuts. Also, it too hot in mid-summer, and too many skeeters.
We have both reds and grays in the same woods.
My favorite is a heavy barrel Ruger 10-22 with a 4-12 variable scope.
