Most companies that make cars actually tun them for best performance at a certain MPH. Believe it or not a '05 silverado extended cab v6 (Like mine) is tuned (per chevrolet) for 62 MPH.
You are correct btw slowing down can save ALOT of gas. If I have an emergency at work and have to drive 80 to get there I usually burn about 1/4 of a tank. If I am driving in on any normal day at around 65 I burn less than 1/8 of a tank. . . .
