I know a guy who semi-recently (3-4 months ago) found a classified ad like that.
He went to check it out and brought back a broomhandle mauser in pretty good shape with shoulderstock/holster, and some kinda nifty little rifle for $500.
I cannot remember the exact rifle, but it looked alot like a MAS36 or M38 carbine from a distance, was chambered in an 8mm rimmed cartridge, and was a straightpull bolt.
The rifle probably isnt worth alot dollar wise, but he made out like a bandit on the broomhandle. He even told them so, but they said if he was happy with the price, they were as well.
Happy? he was bouncing out of there like a lil kid in a candyshop.
