Your friend is misunderstanding what 22-02 means, and is takeing it to be the chambering. This is incorrect, what his father has is a 22-02 RIFLE, which is a Winchester 22 model 02 that is a rifle, introduced in 1902 !

This rifle was:

Winchester model 02 Bolt action Single Shot

A Take down, basically the same as the model 1900, but with some minor improvements. Calibers: 22 short, and long, 22 EXTRA LONG, and long rifle. Weight: 3 pounds, made 1902 to 1931

22-02, a 22 rifle, model 02 (introduced in 1902)
