I don't drink much either, but I've known people who drink to excess, and some of them were like that.

Hey, easy there.
I used to resemble that remark. I suffered an injury where I turned about 1/8th of my brain into Vanilla pudding and was taking numerous medications to correct seizures. Not being one to follow directions I mixed the Meds with booze.
I became an alcholic. After a short attitude adjustment session with my kids I became aware, very, of my condition. They told me to shape up or ship out. So I sought Medical help.
It was one heck of a process. Tater would know what I'm talking about but the rest of you don't need to know and would be horffied. I was still in the Military at the time.
I'm still an alcoholic but now I know when to stop. I realize that is a contradiction but true. Besides that I
no longer have the need or want to drink myself into oblivion.
Can you be a drunk and straighten yourself out. You bet your patootie you can but it takes resolve. I did it but I had the help of my family and comrades.
Best wishes, Bill
