I love goin to Jamestown & Williamsburg and all the civil war battlefields. I am perty lucky in that respect, as I dont live but about an hour 1/2 from almost every battlefield here in VA. (I live smack in the middle of the state.)
One of my favorites tho is not state run. Pamplin Park in Petersburg is amazing. It's a livin history park which is on an old farm that was on the front lines of the siege of Petersburg. It's not but 2 miles from Petersburg national battlefield, so you get a 2 for one. It's an all dayer...but it is a wonderful place to visit.
My personal fave...they shoot alot of cannon there

They also have civil war soldier camp for the kids where they are civil war soldiers (complete with gun, uniform, barracks, mess hall, haversacks & they learn to make makin their own tools and the like)...which is a week long. They have overnight camps too.
It's also the "national museum of the civil war soldier". TONS of artifacts, clothes and such.
