IME, if you want to replace a 1911 front sight, that's the time to get a dovetail cut for front sights- makes life a heckuva lot easier down the road when you decide you'd like a different sight.
Having a gunsmith cut a dovetail won't cost a whole lot more than a staking tool costs, and after that, replacing front sights is easy.
