cardboard works,so do old ceiling tiles or buffalo board,best thing is that hi density plastic foam stuff that computers come packed in...
pretty simple to build,just need a couple of 2x10's the length that you want your backstop wide,and 4 pieces of ready rod,or all thread or whatever you want to call it,a bit longer than you want your backstop high.
stack your backing material up and sandwich between the 2x10's using the the ready rod to tighten it all down.you will have to drill 4 holes in each 2x10.

I always use old ceiling tiles and make the backstop a foot thick.They last a long time even with broadheads and never worried about passthrough,shootin 140gr.bear razors on 2317 @ 84lbs outta a high country safari hunter.

not very portable...but plenty tough...
