3" chamber

My friend bouight a Stoeger Commanche that is chambered in 3" for both barrels, he got 2 the 12 and 20 gauge,. He is trying to tell me that he can shoot 2 3/4" shells in it. I have shown him my browning and stevens where it says either or 2 3/4" or 3". He says it makes no difference if it can shoot 3 it can shoot 2 3/4". I dont think this is correct and would hate to see him blow himself up, he owes me money. If i am wrong then i stand corrected but he has promised me that he will wait to shoot it until i get an answer. thanks in advance
