Turning this into a legitimate discussion, it has been postulated that the non-toxic shot regulations are the root cause of this.
The rationale is that steel shot was so ineffective that many hunters simply gave up waterfowling, especially for geese, which proved extra-tough to bag with non-lead shot. Because they were no longer so harassed, the geese tended to migrate less. Becoming resident, and without having their numbers trimmed, they overpopulated. So many geese in the air add to the chances that they'll be hit by planes.
Result: people are at greater risk of airline disaster because of non-toxic shot rules.
