I'm surprised nobody mentioned this. Years ago, Remington brought out the .280 Rem. but chambered only the pump and semi-auto rifles for he round. Power level was kept sufficiently low for those two rifles. People wanted the round in the M700 so Remington changed the name to
7MM Remington Express and made the load a bit hotter. Then people started mixing up the name 7MM Rem. Exp. with 7MM Rem. Mag. and shooting the round in 7MM mag. rifles, and now you know the rest of the story. It didn't take Remington long to change the name back to .280 Remington. I wonder if they then downloaded the powder change back to original levels? Just a very poor choice in renaming the cartridge IMHO. Still, people should pay more attention to what they should be using in their rifles.
