I will watch the movie, again. There are a few subtle things to watch for: First, he gets a .36 or .40 Hawken (?) early on and Redford says, "Well at least it is a Hawken." Later he gets a .50 Hawken off a frozen corpse.
When Redford uses his horse for a shield to shoot an elk, watch him use a powder horn to prime a PERCUSSION rifle. I know, it will make no difference to the untrained eye. LOL.
