Sap from the silver maple tree is also used for syrup but it is one of the lowest sugar contents of all the maple family trees. Also called as popplecop said, soft maple. Mid feb will be tree tap time for syrup..right around the corner...already have the equipment ready and is a good sign spring on the way..I am sure there would not be enough sap in the limbs you use to rustle up a critter on a fire to bother anything anyhow..However if not fresh cut probably will burn as regular firewood does for the length of time it would take to cook the meal.
Never use conifer trees, such as PINE, FIR, SPRUCE, REDWOOD, CEDAR, CYPRESS, etc. never use anything that has mold, fungus or painted surfaces or sumac but it sounds like you already know what you are doing. Just a little added info...I can smell the firewood now.
