The duck gods are fickle..........

Went hunting 10/21 (first time on managed area this season; second time since season opened), and almost didn't make the draw because I almost missed the ferry due to a train.....then, I was drawn second to last.....ended up in a very poor area....then, I discovered a leak in my waders (right at crotch level! )......and there was very little flying.

Only one duck came my way.........

....I was lucky to bag him; he ended up being a drake canvasback!

Yes, the duck gods can be fickle..............

Hey that was great, if one is to get only one duck a bull can is the best. Take it you shot it with a 16.

Awww man..I wouldn't shoot another can..especially with a 16. Ya need to shoot them with at least a 3 1/2 inch 12..or a 3 1/2 inch 10 would be even better. Just funnin ya Mr 16. A can is a really neat bird to bag..Redheads too. No cans here but the mallards and even som pintails are showing up in good numbers. Going duckin tomorrow ..peasant hunting..yeah..peasants. They always complain so much when ya shoot them. .pHeasants is what I meant...on Tuesday. Got a good number on the ranch this year. Then we're going elk hunting either Wednesday or Thursday...Still up pretty high but the snow and cold is bringin 'em down. Next week is more duckin and a friend who is a masochist wants to go hunt chuckers next week too. I doubt I can run that fast though..even with dogs they run too much. But I had a guy give me a case of Remington pigeon loads so maybe the shot can catch 'em. They closed his pigeon shooting club down in Pa. darn it. They finally caved in to too many lawsuits I think. Stupid anti's with stupid lawyers

Come to think off it Skeet, I do have a 10 ga. turkey gun, may be I should take that and one 16, also have a 3.5" 12 O/U. Now I could leave both 16s at home. Naw I'll stick with the original plan.

Man, it sounds like you are having a good time hunting, and going a lot of it. I am doing a ton more than last year and having a blast so far this year. Just wished I could have done more dove hunting, but such is life. I'm going pheasant hunting for free tomorrow on a regulated shooting area. Supposedly, we are going after 200 birds that are left from a tower shoot. Should be able to fill up the trunk with them, but my wife doesn't want to eat them if I use lead shot. What would you guys recommend in the steel variety? I was thinking about going with some 3" Remington Nitro 4's. Think that will get the job done? I know this is completely off topic, but just thought about it and figured I might as well post it before I forget. Sorry Mr. 16.

Steel #4s should work just fine....don't even need 3" if you have 2 3/4" shells. Just make sure you clean them well.....nothing worse than biting into a steel pellet!

Yeah, I figured as much.....even so, I hunt with a friend who has another friend who insists that you need 3 1/2 #2 hevishot to kill ducks, and that you need a .300 Weatherby mag as minimum for whitetails. Needless to say, we don't hunt much together..........

Made 8 geese worth of jerky so far this year and haven't found a single pellet in the breast meat (knock on wood). I am hoping that with #4 shot I will get through and through shots on the pheasants.

I hunt ducks with 3 1/2" #2 hevi-shot and my favorite deer hunting rifle is a Ruger 77MKII in .300 Win Mag. LOL For the most part though, I use 3" shells for ducks and I have used a .270 and .30-06 for whitetails.

I just find that the 3 1/2" and the .300 Win Mag kills them deader. LOL

Farmer next door has a small corn field(bout 30 acres half cut and oh my gosh the mallards and pintails are hitting it in the evening. Friend and I shot 7 ducks yesterday evening. We shot 4 pheasants this afternoon...after I got back from Billings. We actually jumped about 30 or so. Lot more birds than I thought. They are everywhere. Was going elk hunting tomorrow but snowing up there so gonna wait till it stops. 8-9000 ft ain't the place to be when it's snowin hard. Might hit the duckies again tomorrow.
