squirrel pelt preserving

I have a squirrel pelt. I am looking to tack it down and use the salt method on it to preserve it. Should this be left inside where its warm or can i leave it in my garage which is not insulated and cold for it to do its thing properly. I live in NH. Also how many times and often do i need to reapply salt.

I'd leave it in the garage if it were me.
