How is everyone's trapping season going?

I actually got a late start! I was going to wait until the weather got a little colder (our season started Oct. 17th) but then had some other things to attend to and didn't get any traps out till last Tuesday. So far I got 2 coons and a oppossum.

Here is a few pics of the coons.

I haven't trapped since 1972 and seeing this first guy (top) in my set and staring at me felt bad when I had to dispatch it! I am going to pull my traps just before deer season and then put them back out right after it closes. Don't want to lose any traps to deer hunters.

Anyone else take any pics?

Jude

Speaking of losing traps

I thought I'd set a couple of rat traps down in the creek that runs through this property. I went to the shed to grab a couple and they were gone. All of my 1 1/2 coils and all of my 110 conibears and also a colony rat trap that I made and never used are gone.
The traps were hanging on the wall of the shed.
Some SO* when into my shed and stole them.Damn that makes me mad.

Sorry about the previous rant

My neighbor asked if I wanted to catch the fox or coyote that was digging under his fence.
Sure says I.
So I grabbed an old #2 coil and made a set in the mouth of the hole. Sure enough a couple of days later there he was. The scrawniest lil possum I've seen in a while. .
Late this summer I bought a golf cart that I installed a lift kit on. It makes a fairly good atv. I just have to be careful where I take it. Well when I went to retrieve my prize possum the damned cart left me stranded at the far end of my neighbors pasture. I hoofed it home , about a mile, and drove over with the truck and a trailer and hauled the cart home. I still can't get the thing started.
So to answer your question---Things are about normal.

Talking Sorry to hear about the traps

Well, it's been a kind of funny trapping season for me so far this year. This year I got out early on opening day ( November 15 ) and set all five of my traps. So far I've caught as follows: 3 opposum, a small bird that must have smelled the sardines...he was dead when I got there he had landed on the trap pan and was small enough that the jaws (1 1/2 victor) got him by the neck and choked him I guess. And most recently a skunk which I hope to have pictures of on here shortly because the stripe on his back was orange instead of white and it wouldn't wash out.Not a bright orange but more like a light orangeish color. It was funny. Now there is a story that goes with it but it would take a while to write it out...at least I didn't get sprayed.

Hello fellow trappers! I have been working with my FIL who has been trapping for about 35 yrs. and am going for my trappers licence in the next year or so. I have been going out with him for about 4 years on and off and doing most of the skinning and fleshing for all the catches. He has a trapline that produces some good martin & beaver, but the last couple of years we have been doing more 'problem trapping' than on the line. Mostly either for logging outfits having problems with beaver flooding haul roads, or trapping otter on creeks that are being restored as spawning runs for salmon. Talley so far this year:

Coon- 4 (2 off of the back porch!)
Beaver- 6
Mink- 1
Otter- 23!

Good luck and be safe out there!
Colin
