Officer killed investigating traffic accident
(LOUISVILLE) -- A police officer was fatally shot Wednesday in an incident that also left another person dead.
Police said the second person died of a gunshot wound that was apparently self-inflicted. Police Chief Robert White and Mayor Jerry Abramson appeared at a morning news conference to announce the officer's death at University Hospital. The officer was Peter Grignon, 28, a two-year veteran of the force. The shooting happened about 7 a.m. EST. Police blocked interstate ramps and downtown streets in rush-hour traffic to clear a path for the ambulance carrying the police officer. White said Grignon was dispatched on a suspected hit-and-run. He said the officer was confronted by one or two people and was shot, and the shooter then turned the gun on himself. White said another suspect had been taken into custody. A doctor said it appeared Grignon suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and neck area. "It's an incredible tragedy," said Abramson, who had sworn in Grignon as an officer two years ago. web page
