Rebarreling an M1 Garand
I am really spoiled in having a first class gunsmith located in the next village who is also my good friend. He just rebarreled a WWII vintage M1 Garand for my nephew who shoots the National Match Course each month from March through December. His rifle had a worn barrel, eroded throat and missing rifling from the muzzle area. The local gunsmith just completed the project and we will pick up the rifle tomorrow. That works because we have our next match on Sunday. All the best...

Gil,
That is an option to have a local gunsmith rebarrel a Garand. Another option may be to have the Army or Marine Corps Marksmanship Training Units (MTUs) do the job since you are in an accredited CMP Firearms Program. I went to Camp Perry twice on my state high power rifle team. Each morning they weighed triggers on the firing line for all 1500 competitor's guns. If your Garand or M14 did not pass, they sent you to either of two semi-trailer gunshops just behind the line for refit. The Army had a trailer as did the Marine Corps. I went to one and got a half-minute rear sight installed on my match Garand for the swap out of the old sight. I think the MTUs would be an option for rebarreling for CMP competitors as they are skilled in that stuff and have GI parts. If not, well you can't loose much if you do not ask. Adam

There are no local MTUs
The CMP has not offered rebarreling services to our CMP-affiliated club in any of the literature submitted to me in the last three years. While our club is CMP-affiliated, the matches we shoot are NRA Approved Tournaments. If I see any MTUs driving around Eastern Pennsylvania, I will inquire about their rebarreling services. Thank you for the input. All the best...

Gil,
If you attend your state highpower rifle championships, you will see several military teams on the line "warming up" for Camp Perry. The military teams are often supported by MTU trucks. You can "talk the talk" and see what services are available on an informal basis. Well, that is what I did and it may be an option. Adam

B Lupold, Welcome to the Forum!
I saw that rifle and Dr. Boyle was very impressed with the crown job that your gunsmith did. Good to have you posting here and hope you visit often. All the best...
